LUCEDALE, Mississippi -- George County crime victims now have access to custody information on criminals. The George County Sheriff's Department went live earlier this week with the Mississippi Statewide Automated Victim Information Notification Service program. MS SAVIN is a service program that will notify crime victims when county or state inmates escape, are released, or are transferred to and from other participating agencies. Once registered, a victim can choose to receive this notification over the telephone, by email or text messaging, 24 hours a day. "Protecting the citizens of George County is always our highest priority," Sheriff John Keel said. The notification is free and is confidential. "MS SAVIN provides an added level of protection because it gives everyone access to timely and accurate information in our county, and throughout the state," Keel said. The George County Regional Correctional Facility, through the Mississippi Department of Corrections, was already involved in the program for the state inmates only. "We're delighted that we could make this important service available to the public," Keel said. Through the program, other law enforcement agencies, prosecutors or court personnel can search to see who is in the George County jail. To use the program, users may log onto www.vinelink.com or call 888-967-7284. For TTY hearing-impaired or hard-of-hearing users, dial 866-847-1298. Callers then provide an offender's name, or booking number, to access custody information. Also, users can register multiple email addresses or phone numbers where they can be automatically notified.
