BELKNAP COUNTY, N.H. -- Police found an inmate who escaped from the Belknap County Jail in a Laconia home.

Jail officials said 24-year-old Joel Barlow was picked up at a home on Blueberry Lane.

He was found hiding under a bed and was taken into custody without incident shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday.

Authorities said Barlow attempted to flee the state before returning to Laconia. Law enforcement agencies said they conducted a thorough man hunt in the area which resulted in tips leading them to the escaped inmate.

Officers said Barlow escaped about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday from a medium-security housing unit in Laconia.

"He appears to have come out of a second story window, came down to the ground, scaled the fence and fled on foot," Belknap County Department of Corrections Superintendent Daniel Ward said.

The fence is about 12 feet high, and an immediate search did not turn up any results, but investigators said they were able to track down valuable information.
