Sheriff's New Job Training Program: Graduates First Class |

Eight inmates at the Norfolk County Correctional Center recently completed the inaugural landscape maintenance course that is the latest addition to the vocational training curriculum at the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office. The landscape maintenance program covered areas such as shrub and tree trimming, turf management, an explanation of various weeds and insect pests and an introduction to chemical agents used to control them, and fertilization. The inmates learned about various grass types and seed variations. The course also provided instruction on the operation of power equipment such as mowers, trimmers and backpack blowers. This program was funded through a Perkins Foundation grant. The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office has received similar Perkins grants in recent years to pay for other vocational programs as well. The landscape maintenance program is the latest addition to a vocational curriculum that includes instruction in culinary arts, baking, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and computers. “We chose this curriculum in pursuit of a very specific goal, which is to try to keep the inmates from reoffending when they leave this facility,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “If we can give them a job skill, and they get back on the road to productivity, it’s a win-win for everyone.” |
