10 officers stage walkout at Chelan County Jail |

Ten officers at the Chelan County Regional Justice Center in Washington state walked off the job for about an hour two weeks ago to protest what they call long-standing and dangerous security conditions. Their walkout was prompted by a failed breakout attempt Aug. 7, in which a broken window was not discovered until after inmates smuggled a hacksaw and jack into the jail. The workers said they wondered what would stop inmates from smuggling in guns and knives, too. The walkout occurred on the west side of the jail, as workers on the east side replaced the window broken in the escape attempt. Chelan County officials have talked about a new security system for the jail since New Year's Eve 2002, when inmates broke a window and smuggled in items. Saturday's attempted escape came about a week before a jail advisory board was to finalize plans for a new security system, said interim Jail Administrator Gale Wick. Wick said the walkout stopped normal operations at the jail but did not cause serious problems. |
