South Dakota -- A convicted rapist scheduled for release from state prison on Friday plans to live near Lead, according to the Department of Corrections. Daniel McQuillen was sentenced to 55 years in prison for first-degree rape on Oct. 1, 1982. He confessed to the rape of an 11-year-old newspaper delivery girl in Sioux Falls on Sept. 12, 1982. "Based on the inmate's criminal history, his refusal to undergo assessments and recommended treatment while incarcerated, and his decision in 2003 to waive appearances before the Board of Pardons and Paroles and discharge his sentence, I believe it to be prudent to alert law enforcement and the public of his pending release," Department of Corrections Secretary Denny Kaemingk said in a news release Wednesday. According to South Dakota Supreme Court documents, McQuillen also admitted to assaulting two other victims when he confessed to the girl's rape. He waived his right to a jury trial and was found guilty by a judge. After serving 29 years, the 57-year-old McQuillen will be released Friday without any parole restrictions. His sentence was reduced under prior statutory guidelines that allowed him to accumulate good time. McQuillen will be required, however, to update his information on the South Dakota Sex Offender Registry. He will have three business days to register with Lawrence County after arriving in the county. Read More. |
