HANCOCK COUNTY -- The new $38 million Hancock County jail complex project is expected to be finished this month, giving law enforcement officers a place to house county inmates locally for the first time since Hurricane Katrina. Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam, who officially began his first term on Sunday, said by the end of this month, officials expect to have finished the new brick county jail, which is about five miles west of Waveland on U.S. 90. After a nearly two-month training period for jailers there, the first inmates could be jailed there in early March. Adam said the new jail could make work a lot easier for local law enforcement. “I think it’s going to be a big morale boost (to law enforcement) to have the facility,” Adam said. Since the 2005 storm heavily damaged the former county jail, Hancock County inmates have been housed first in Pearl River County, but more recently in Marion County, which is a couple of hours’ drive from the Coast. Hancock County has been paying Marion County housing costs of about $25 daily for each inmate and typically, there are about 130 Hancock County inmates at any given time. This means an estimated cost of $1.2 million annually to house them there, plus the transportation costs associated with moving the inmates back and forth. The annual operating costs for the new Hancock County jail, which the county will now bear, weren’t available by deadline. Read More. |
