Corrections director, former sheriff Dan Heyns visits old prison camp to assess cleanup progress |

Wearing a suit and tie, Michigan Department of Corrections Director Dan Heyns climbed the side of a large truck to examine the vehicle’s load of scrap metal. He wandered up a ladder and into old bunkers, sheds and barns, noting newly cleared floors and some existing piles of debris. “They still have some work to do, but it’s a lot better,” Heyns said today at what used to be Camp Waterloo on Maute Road in Waterloo Township. Taking advantage of a sunny day, he visited the closed prison facility this afternoon to check the progress of a cleanup he ordered after township officials and residents complained last year about the state of the camp.
