POLK CITY | The Demilly Correctional Institution in Polk City will close June 1, one of seven prisons the state plans to close this year.

The prisons are being closed because of declining prison admission and excess bed space, the state Department of Corrections said in a press release today.

Demilly currently houses 342 prisoners and has 118 full-time employees. The closing will mean a savings of $6 million for fiscal year 2012-13, the Corrections Department said.

The largest facility slated to close is New River Correctional Institute in Raiford. Other prisons slated to close are: Broward, Gainesville, Hillsborough, Indian River, Jefferson correctional institutions. Hillsborough and Broward correctional institutions are women's prisons.
