Area corrections officers to dive into Wildwood Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics |

WOODBURY — Steve Newsom’s children filled his bathtub with ice and water recently and told him to hop in. He needed to practice, they said, just as he’s always told them that practice makes perfect in any sports they play. So Newsom, a Gloucester County Department of Corrections (DOC) Lieutenant, had to oblige. He sat in the freezing tub, and practiced for this Saturday’s sixth annual Wildwood Polar Bear Plunge. Each year, teams of law enforcement and corrections officers splash in the Atlantic that laps at Wildwood’s shore. Before the event, teams raise money, all of which goes to the New Jersey Special Olympics. The team raising the most money wins a trophy. Newsom, a 21-year corrections veteran, is President of Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 165. The FOP altogether is a supporter of the event. For Newsom, it’s a fun way to give kids with disabilities a chance to shine. That’s why local officers, including a group at the Gloucester County Jail in Woodbury, formed their own team. This is the third year the team of local guys and their family and friends will compete. The Piggy Park Plungers - named after DOC officer Scott Rambo’s shore area property - included 46 members as of Wednesday.
