Proposed criminal justice plan deserves Oklahoma lawmakers' attention |

A proposal to spend our criminal justice dollars in Oklahoma differently than we have for years is one that should be taken seriously by lawmakers during the 2012 session. As we have said many times before, current practices are unsustainable. Researchers with the Justice Center at The Council of State Governments directed the months-long project and produced recommendations after soliciting input from prosecutors, judges, Department of Corrections workers and others. The result is a plan that, the Justice Center says, will save money and produce a better mousetrap. The overriding goal is to enhance public safety. Researchers have noted that Oklahoma's violent crime rate the past 10 years hasn't fallen nearly as far as the national average. This plan would give law enforcement more help to fight crime and would attempt to better manage the flow into and out of our prisons. Read More. |
