A prison officers group, citing an ongoing dispute between New York and the families of employees killed and injured during the 1971 Attica prison riot, blasted the Republican Party last Wednesday for holding its national convention in New York City. "To America's correctional officers, the decision couldn't be more wrong or the location more insulting," Richard Loud, president of the Wyoming-based Corrections U.S.A., wrote in a letter to national GOP Chairman Ed Gillespie. "To us, it's a national disgrace." "How can the Republican Party, which claims to be the party of law enforcement, hold its convention in a state where the Republican governor still refuses to resolve the most shameful betrayal of our profession in American history?" Loud added. A spokesman said Gov. George Pataki was working to resolve the Attica issues. Corrections U.S.A. says it represents more than 100,000 correctional officers nationwide. There are almost 220,000 prison officers in the United States. |
