BELLEVUE, IL — A twice-convicted murderer saved one final act of brutality for his last day in Peoria County, assaulting jailers Thursday as he was led from his cell, sending one correctional officer to the hospital. Edjuan Payne was being transferred from his cell to a different part of the facility to await transport to the Illinois Department of Corrections intake area in Joliet when he attacked a sergeant who had entered his cell to retrieve jail property. Two other jailers also were injured in the struggle that ensued. Two of the men were treated at the jail for minor lacerations, and the third jailer was treated and released from a local hospital for a minor head injury and torn tendon in a finger. "Usually (injuries to guards) come from breaking up fights between inmates," said jail Superintendent Brian Asbell. "This was a straight-out attack on staff." Payne, who has previously assaulted staff and had to be pepper sprayed while waiting for one of his hearings at the Peoria County Courthouse, was sentenced to life in prison last week for the May 2010 slaying of Orvette Davis. Her body was found in a North Valley alley alongside her infant granddaughter, who survived with a fractured skull. Payne killed the woman in his mother's nearby home, then panicked and tried to flee while police inundated the area after the body and baby were discovered. He was immediately taken into custody.
