Pardons were 'irresponsible'

Mississippi -- I am furious at the release of David Glenn Gatlin, who shot his wife in the head while she was holding his son ("Killer pardoned by Barbour," Jan. 9). Then he turned the gun on the only witness. I am not a big fan of executing criminals, but in this case Gatlin should have received the death penalty.

Now Gatlin is free and permitted to buy firearms. Something is wrong with this picture, and that something is former Gov. Haley Barbour.

Then comes the case of Karen Irby (“Karen Irby, 207 others granted reprieves by Haley Barbour,” Jan. 11). She pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the deaths of two promising doctors, who had much to offer the world of medicine. Put her in jail for the 18 years that she was sentenced to by the court.
