Locked up in a lockdown: Foster's staff witnesses a drill first-hand at the Strafford County Department of Corrections |

DOVER NH — For someone who is borderline obsessed with jail house reality shows, I was beyond thrilled upon an invitation from the Strafford County Department of Corrections to experience their lockdown procedures first hand. Accompanying me in my brief stint to jail was Online News Editor Janine Mitchell, who I will mention has spent countless hours viewing jail-based reality shows like "First Week In." The two of us, barely five-feet tall, were escorted through the multilevel correctional facility on County Farm Road on Jan. 26. Mitchell with her petite video camera in hand and me holding my trusty white notebook were ready for some serious action. "A lot of people have the impression that the county jails don't have serious criminals in it," said Superintendent of Corrections Ray Bower, one of the individuals who led us on our tour. "Every murderer that you read about or hear about, that's convicted, starts in a county jail." Though I was aware of this ahead of time, I was surprised when Bower went on saying inmates in Strafford County are classified into different units based strictly on their conduct in the facility and not necessarily on the crime they are accused of. He warned us we would be passing through housing units where inmates are capable of roaming freely. Needless to say, I stuck a little bit closer to the staff that was leading us through the jail. Over the past couple of weeks, Strafford County Department of Corrections has run a string of inmate lockdowns to debrief staff on appropriate procedures, refine inmate response, and look for any areas where efficiencies in the procedure can be made. When we arrived on Thursday for a lockdown Bower and his staff scheduled to occur around 11:30 a.m., inmates just finished up helpings of beef stew. Read More. |
