AUGUSTA, ME — A complaint against the prison system filed by a prisoner serving a 40-year sentence for shooting a sheriff’s deputy has been rejected by the Maine Human Rights Commission (MHRC) as having no reasonable grounds. Richard Burdick, who is serving his sentence at the Maine State Prison in Warren, filed the complaint alleging the prison failed to provide the heart-healthy diet that he was prescribed after emergency heart surgery performed in February 2010. Burdick claimed the prison system discriminated against him on the basis of his disability by denying him “reasonable accommodations while he was incarcerated.” He additionally claimed his repeated requests to receive the special diet had been rebuked by prison staff.
