DOC asks for $15M, Fort Lyon still planned to close |

LAS ANIMAS, Colo. — The Department of Corrections asked for $15 million to house prisoners, but still plans to close Fort Lyon. DOC didn’t get the $15 million, but the Joint Budget Committee unanimously passed an $11.3 sum for DOC Monday afternoon. This reporter had talked to Katherine Sanguinetti, spokesman for DOC and she said they weren’t asking for a new prison as rumored, but Joint Budget Committee member Senator Pat Steadman said the money was to cover costs for inmates in private prisons and county jails. Steadman said there had been a predicted decline in prisoners, but that decline had not been as much as previously predicted so there are more prisoners than budgeted for in the system. The decline was predicted by private agencies, Division of Criminal Justice and the Legislative Council, but did not meet their predictions in the first three months of July, August and September. That decline is a reality for October, November and December with population drops of 212, 232, and 177 for those months, according to Alison Morgan, spokesman for the DOC. Read More. |
