Prison privatization in trouble

In a show of force that got him called a schoolyard bully, Senate President Mike Haridopolos fired a defiant budget subcommittee chairman Wednesday for rallying Republican opposition to prison privatization.

The privatization bill is in big trouble despite Gov. Rick Scott's personal intervention. A vote on the largest prison privatization proposal ever was put off until at least next week.

Haridopolos expressed respect and friendship for Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, but said he could no longer chair the Senate Criminal and Civil Justice Budget panel because of his accusation that privatizing prisons is a reward for giant corporations. Fasano said he understood that the leadership couldn't tolerate open rebellion but that it's more important that GOP senators follow their minds on issues of right and wrong, rather than toeing the line on cutting state spending.

Haridopolos has this year and last bypassed Fasano's committee with the proposal to turn over 29 state-run prison facilities in South Florida to private companies. This year's bill ran into rigid opposition on the Senate floor by up to 10 Republicans and all but one of the dozen Democrats in the chamber.
