| 20 injured in prison bus crash |

Up to 20 people were reported injured Tuesday morning when a bus carrying inmates at the stockade to court was involved in a multi-vehicle collision that stalled early morning rush-hour traffic, news partner NewsChannel 5 reported. NewsChannel 5 reporter Jamie Holmes said the 7:20 a.m. crash west of Florida's Turnpike on Belvedere Road sent 15 people to three different hospitals while others were treated and released at the scene. Nine inmates, three correctional deputies and at least three civilians were reported taken to Palms West, Columbia or Wellington hospitals for treatment, Holmes said. None of the injuries was believed life threatening. Most victims complained of neck or back injuries. Condition updates were not immediately available. Holmes said the accident occurred on Belvedere just east of Benoist Farms Road when a truck collided with a car and the car hit the prison bus. Two other cars were hit by the veering car, police said. That site is located near the South Florida Fairgrounds, which is west of Haverhill and just southwest of West Palm Beach. The crash stalled eastbound rush-hour traffic. Traffic movement was reported moving on one open lane later in the morning, but officials were asking drivers to avoid the area and detour to Okeechobee or Southern boulevards. There were no escapes, said Paul Miller, a spokesman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Miller said all the inmates were in leg chains and the police escort accompanying the bus were not involved in the crash. He said the inmates were being taken from stockade to West Palm Beach for court appearances. |
