NORFOLK, MA — Gov. Deval Patrick’s plan to close the Bay State Correctional Center in Norfolk is being met with strong opposition and concern from town officials and local lawmakers. Saying it will save about $8 million, Patrick included the closure of the medium security prison in his FY2013 budget proposal released last week. State Rep. Dan Winslow, R-Norfolk, is dead-set against the idea and said he vows to fight the closure. “The governor’s approach is wrong-headed because it would be a safety risk to the general public, to inmates and to corrections officers to increase overcrowding by closing a prison,” Winslow said. Bay State houses 250-260 inmates, he said. Winslow noted the state prison system is already at 143 percent of capacity, “which means that Massachusetts is warehousing inmates instead of correcting them.” Closing the prison would only exacerbate the problem, he said, and should not even be considered before the state has accomplished prison reform — an issue that is on the radar screen. “I want to put correction back into the Department of Corrections,” Winslow said, “and the way to do that is not to increase overcrowding.” Read More. |
