Wisconsin -- An Oconto man who grabbed a knife while being taken into custody by Oconto Police last summer has been sentenced. Robert Shampo, 20, received on Feb. 2 a determinate sentence of 30 months, including two years confinement and six months extended supervision. He pleaded no contest Dec. 9 to felony bail jumping and disorderly conduct as part of a plea agreement. Shampo received 90 days jail on the latter charge, to be served concurrently. Charges of second-degree reckless endangerment, negligent handling of a weapon and resisting an officer were read into the record and dismissed. The incident occurred July 19 when then Police Chief Dale Carper and Officer John Fuller went to check on Shampo's welfare at a residence in the 300 block of McDonald Street. Police had received a report that he might be threatening suicide. After speaking to Shampo, Carper told Shampo he was being taken into custody on four outstanding warrants. The officers went inside the house with Shampo as he retrieved his shoes. Shampo then asked if he could smoke, and Carper told him no, as he was in custody. Read More. |
