The Luzerne County District Attorney's Office started an investigation Monday into the Jan. 27 birth of twins in a prison cell, First Assistant District Attorney Samuel Sanguedolce said. The district attorney's office learned about the newborn's death Friday, Sanguedolce said. Interim county Manager Tom Pribula said he asked District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis to investigate after he learned about the baby's death Friday. Pribula said he may ask the state Department of Corrections to investigate to see if county prison personnel acted appropriately. Court records identify the mother as Samantha Gonzalez, 23. Freeland police reported they arrested Gonzalez and Ryan Petrulsky, both 23, on Jan. 26 for failure to appear in court in Schuylkill County on retail-theft charges. Gonzalez and Petrulsky, both of Freeland, were the parents of Nevaeh Gonzalez Petrulsky, the newborn girl who died Jan. 27, according to an obituary published in The Citizens' Voice. The prison released the mother, whom Piazza wouldn't identify by name, after a judge from Schuylkill County authorized her release from jail. Read More. |
