Bill would ban public cash from inmate sex changes

COLUMBIA — A legislative committee is debating a bill that would prohibit any state money from being used on sexual reassignment surgery for inmates.

Under current policy, the South Carolina Department of Corrections is obligated to pay for hormonal treatment and surgery for inmates who come into the prison system somewhere in the sex-change process.
