Jefferson inmate found possessing pot, smoking materials |

An investigation is underway to identify the source who supplied marijuana and smoking materials to an inmate at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building. The sheriff’s department disclosed early Thursday that on Feb. 10 an inmate, Gary A. Collins, 34, was found to be possessing on his person quantities of marijuana, matches, match strikers, tobacco and paper. He has been charged with first-degree possession of dangerous prison contraband and unlawful possession of marijuana. The discovery came two weeks before Mr. Collins is due for sentencing in Jefferson County Court on a charge of aggravated cruelty to an animal. An ex-convict, he admitted to beating a dog to death with a hammer. The contraband was found after a dog trained in narcotics detection was brought into the jail for a mid-afternoon search, and the dog alerted to Mr. Collins’ cell, according to the sheriff’s office. Sheriff John P. Burns said such K-9 searches are not done routinely, but are utilized when there is cause to believe that an illigal or prohibited substance has been introduced to the facility.
