MANSFIELD, OH — Bob Mack wasn’t around Wednesday to receive his award as the Richland County sheriff’s deputy of the year.

The veteran reportedly was in Florida.

“He actually left Florida about seven days ago. You can’t get very far on a Hoveround,” Maj. Dale Fortney quipped.

Mack was among the employees recognized by Sheriff Steve Sheldon for their efforts in 2011. Sheldon said he would like to have given out more awards.

“The Richland County Sheriff’s Office has a rich heritage,” Sheldon said. “We have many people that do a great job every day. Ninety-eight percent of the work that gets done by the sheriff’s office is great work by great employees.”

Noting the economic downturn that started in 2008, Sheldon said his office has gone from about 150 employees to around 100.

“They’re doing more work than ever before,” he said.

Two deputies remain laid off, though all the corrections officers are back on the job. One of them, Lt. Bob Santoro, was chosen as corrections supervisor of the year. The 20-year veteran is the night-shift watch commander.
