A Hidalgo County (Texas) jury has convicted a former jail officer of official oppression for hitting an inmate while he was restrained by detention officers. Guadalupe Rodea Junior was on trial in the January 2003 incident. He was not immediately sentenced last week. The 30-year-old had been a sergeant with the Hidalgo County Jail and had worked for the sheriff's department since 1995. He was fired in March of 2003. Prosecutors said Rodea had taken off his glasses, his belt and part of his uniform before entering Marcos Antonio Lopez's cell and getting into an altercation with the man. Detention officers separated the men. |
