A Florida probation officer charged with overseeing convicted felons was arrested last Friday on a charge he sexually battered and fondled a child younger than 12. Bradenton Police Department detectives arrested R. Steven Quesenberry, 60, a longtime probation officer with the Florida Department of Corrections and an active Manatee County fund-raiser and volunteer, after police say they received information Monday about a juvenile being sexually battered. Quesenberry is in the Manatee County jail on $800,000 bond on charges of capital sexual battery and fondling a child younger than 12. He faces up to life in prison if convicted. Defense attorney Mark Lapinski, said Quesenberry denies the allegations. "Mr. Quesenberry maintains his innocence," Lapinski said. "There's really not much I can say about the case at this point in time. He's been here a long time and I believe he is well-respected." Quesenberry's arrest shocked fellow Kiwanis members who also saw him as a well-respected member of the community. Sterling Ivey, spokesman for the Florida Department of Corrections, said Quesenberry will likely be fired because of the severity of the allegations - whether or not they prove true. "It's pretty likely that once we receive the police report we may go ahead and . . . dismiss him," Ivey said. |
