Re-entry Services is a section within the Georgia Department of Corrections charged with the primary purpose to promote public safety through collaborative partnerships which reflect a seamless system that assist returning offenders to be law-abiding, productive community citizens (Georgia Department of Corrections). University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Sciences and Georgia Department of Corrections Emanuel Women’s Facility formed a collaborative partnership in response to the above strategic plan.

The Learning for Life Series, presented by Marnie A. Dekle, Candler/Emanuel Family and Consumer Sciences agent, began in July 2011. To date approximately 15 of the 20 original participants have returned home. As participants are released into society, new women are added to the roll. We currently have 28 participants on roll. To date topics include: Effective Communication, Managing Stress, Strong Families Eat Together, Cutting Fat & Calories, Shopping for Food on a Budget, Bridging Families during the Holidays and Fit as a Fiddle Body & Mind.

In February, participants of The Learning for Life Series were taught by Dr. Joan Koonce. Koonce is a Professor and Financial Planning Specialist for Family and Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Georgia (UGA). In this role she provides leadership to Cooperative Extension in the areas of insurance, investments, taxes, retirement, and estate planning; trains Family and Consumer Sciences agents; develops educational programs and conducts workshops and seminars for the public. She received her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University with a major in Consumer Economics and a minor in Business Finance. She has worked for UGA for 24 years; 7 years with Cooperative Extension and 17 years teaching undergraduate and graduate personal finance courses in the classroom while conducting research.

The directory includes the biographies of judges presidentially appointed to serve during good behavior since 1789 on the U.S. district courts, U.S. courts of appeals, Supreme Court of the United States, and U.S. Court of International Trade, as well as the former U.S. circuit courts, Court of Claims, U.S. Customs Court, and U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals. Also included are judges who received presidential recess appointments to the above named courts but were not confirmed by the Senate to serve during good behavior. The Waco Federal Judge is experienced in patent litigation and starting to become the go-to district for intellectual property cases. The appointment of Waco’s new federal judge, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that narrows the venue for patent cases and Waco’s home in the federal Western District of Texas have combined into a perfect storm that could drastically alter Waco’s legal landscape.
