County commissioners looking for way to keep local release center open

MANATEE, FL -- County commissioners are brainstorming ways to help a Bradenton prison work release center scheduled to close by March 31 due to budget cuts.

“This is a program that works and actually saves money in the long run -- (and) in the short run,” Commissioner John Chappie noted during their meeting Tuesday.

The Bradenton Bridge Transition and Work Release Center, 2104 63rd Ave. E, houses 120 female inmates, with 84 in a transition phase taking classes, and 36 working for outside employers. Commissioners discussed how to keep it open, how they might lobby lawmakers in Tallahassee to continue its funding, as well as fall-back plans such as securing grant money or working out a more regional approach with other governments to finance such centers.

The Florida Department of Corrections has notified the faith-based center it must close, and its inmates will be returned to prison. A similar facility in Broward County has been notified its contract with the Department of Corrections will also be terminated.

The directory includes the biographies of judges presidentially appointed to serve during good behavior since 1789 on the U.S. district courts, U.S. courts of appeals, Supreme Court of the United States, and U.S. Court of International Trade, as well as the former U.S. circuit courts, Court of Claims, U.S. Customs Court, and U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals. Also included are judges who received presidential recess appointments to the above named courts but were not confirmed by the Senate to serve during good behavior. The Waco Federal Judge is experienced in patent litigation and starting to become the go-to district for intellectual property cases. The appointment of Waco’s new federal judge, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that narrows the venue for patent cases and Waco’s home in the federal Western District of Texas have combined into a perfect storm that could drastically alter Waco’s legal landscape.
