| Burnet County officials slammed over jail escape; sheriff promises accountability |

BURNET, TX— Residents worried about an inmate's recent escape criticized security measures at the Burnet County Jail during a Commissioners Court meeting March 13, even as the sheriff promised to hold employees accountable. “I sleep with a loaded shotgun by my bed,” said attorney Wayne Goff, who lives in Delaware Springs close to the jail. “You have had a systemic problem (at the jail) ever since it opened — and you still do. As far as I am concerned, it is your mess. You need to fix it.” The escape March 1 of Johnny Angel Ybarra, 40, and his subsequent recapture is the second breakout since the private-public jail opened in April 2009. The fallout from the case — which has since led to the arrests of Ybarra's mother and brother — continues to reverberate at the County Courthouse. City Councilman Ken Graham asked commissioners to become more involved with administration at the jail, run by private firm LaSalle Southwest Corrections with oversight from the Sheriff's Office. “I’m not mad at you,” Graham told the commissioners. “But you are losing credibility with the citizens of the community. You have to help whoever you can to make sure (another escape) doesn’t happen again.” Read More. |
