Medical records in Maricopa County jails to go electronic |

Arizona -- The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday agreed unanimously to enter a $4.55 million contract to develop the long-awaited electronic medical-records system for the county’s inmate health-care organization. Maricopa County and Alabama-based NaphCare Inc., are expected to sign the five-year contract later this month to finalize the county’s purchase of software licenses and installation services. The county for years has been criticized for providing inadequate medical care at its jails and for its outdated medical record-keeping system. In 2008, the county’s Correctional Health Services lost national accreditation because of the poor quality of health care in county jails. The county is in the process of getting accredited again. Last December, Correctional Health Services received conditional approval for re-accreditation, meaning the county could officially be accredited again if it proves it has resolved outstanding issues that a national committee identified, including record keeping. Experts for years have recommended the county install a central electronic-records system to maintain medical information about its inmates.
