| Michigan nurses, prison guards take their messages to the streets |

Corrections worker Jim Stageman wants to preserve an armed guard staff position he credits with saving lives during a prison break more than a year ago. Sparrow Hospital nurse Ashley Forsberg is pushing for a proposed law she believes would improve patient care by mandating minimum nurse-patient ratios in Michigan hospitals. The two causes, though different, found common ground Wednesday as groups rallying to support them crossed paths in downtown Lansing. Though the respective rallies took place three blocks from each other, nearly 500 members of the Michigan Nurses Association marched right past roughly 70 picketing members of the Michigan Corrections Organization and United Auto Workers 6000 outside the Department of Corrections offices at Grand and Michigan avenues as nurses walked from the Lansing Center to the Capitol steps.
