Lansing, Mich. — The Michigan State Police (MSP) has linked 74 crimes to 61 state prisoners following analysis of DNA samples collected by the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). These 74 criminal offenses connect to investigations from 35 law enforcement agencies across the state and two out-of-state agencies. The MSP has notified over 40 law enforcement agencies investigating these crimes of the associations, and the MDOC has put measures in place to ensure none of the prisoners associated to these cases are released until the cases are fully investigated and resolved. Public Act 127 of 2011 was signed by Governor Rick Snyder on July 21, 2011. The law required the MDOC to collect DNA samples on all state prisoners by Jan. 1, 2012. “I applaud the outstanding work of our corrections professionals and state police to ensure that justice is served,” Snyder said. The NY state Department of Criminal Justice Services in 2006 started collecting DNA specimens from all inmates convicted of felonies and 67 misdemeanors. As a DNA collection officer I saw hundreds of them take the DNA swab test which was forwarded to the NYS Police crime labs. Once of those misdemeanor crimes led to the conviction of a murderer, the first on the the southwestern part of the state. Governor Cuomo said last week he will sign the expanded DNA collection law as soon as the Assembly passes it which should be very soon. This expanded law will require DNA samples from all sentenced inmates except DWI and family court convictions.
