Attempt to smuggle phones, tobacco into Columbia prison |

SC -- A Union man has been charged with attempting to smuggle contraband into a Columbia prison last month, according to the state Department of Corrections. Investigators from the S.C. Department of Corrections arrested Raymond Whiteside, 64, of 603 Blue Ridge Road, Union, and charged him with criminal conspiracy for the purpose of smuggling contraband items into Broad River Correctional Institution, according to a news release. Whiteside’s stepson, Jamel Goode, is an inmate at the maximum security facility. About 3:40 a.m. Feb. 23, a grey vehicle later identified as being registered to Whiteside was spotted parked on property near the prison, the release states. Packages containing cell phones, tobacco and other contraband were found and believed to have been thrown over a fence on the perimeter of the prison.
