State penitentiary officials in North Dakota have cut inmates' visitation by four hours a month. Warden Tim Schuetzle said reducing monthly visiting hours from 24 to 20 was the best solution to an increase in the number of visitors. He said the prison's small visiting room was too crowded and waiting lines were swelling. Expanding the visiting room and staffing more correctional officers wasn't an option, Schuetzle said. The new visitation policy started on Aug. 1. "The ones with friends and family in Bismarck are taking up space for those who don't get many visits," Schuetzle said. "We thought this was a good way to solve the problem without affecting too many people." Only seven of the prison's 500 inmates regularly used the full 24 hours a month, Schuetzle said. |
