MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Law enforcement officials across the country are dealing with a new trend in inmate contraband: cell phones. In Mobile County, Metro Jail Warden Trey Oliver said it’s the most common thing they find on inmates. There are a lot of things off limits when you're behind bars, but a group of inmates FOX10 spoke to said nothing gets in. "Nothing getting in here. Nothing coming through here, not in here," one inmate said. Contrary to what these inmates said, contraband is getting in. The jail has a collection of forbidden items confiscated, such as a speaker made out of a box of crackers, countless handmade weapons, and chains made from tied up T-shirts. But Oliver said the number one item is cell phones. "There for a while, we were finding them on a weekly basis," said Oliver. The inmates come up with very creative ways to get phones behind bars. "They'll tie it to a piece of string and lower it into a drain," said Oliver. Often employees at the jail will smuggle it in. In one example, an employee was fired.
