Patrols of Michigan Prison Perimeters Changing |

DETROIT (WJBK) -- They patrol 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year, but starting April 1, the Department of Corrections has decided to eliminate armed officers who protect the perimeter of 27 Michigan prisons. It's going to save the state more than $13 million, but try to explain that to Larry Crawford, who lives across the street from the Huron Correctional Facility in Ypslianti. "I don't like it, naturally," he said. His concern, like the officers, is there will no longer be anyone to stop weapons, cutting tools or drugs, sometimes hidden in tennis balls or other items, from being thrown over the barbed wire fence, possibly preventing a prison break. "Our concern is the safety of the institution and the safety of the community that lives around institution," said Mel Grieshaber. The executive director of the Michigan Corrections Organization said it was a corrections patrol officer who recently stopped three convicted murders from escaping from prison in the Eastern Upper Peninsula after they hijacked a semi.
