Statewide lookout for inmate |

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA - Corrections officers were still searching Wednesday for a state prison inmate who left a work detail on the island Tuesday. Also, a statewide lookout remained in effect for Coty Dwan Benefield, 25, who left a crew from Appling Pre-Release Center at Baxley, said Gwendolyn Hogan, spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Corrections. State corrections officers patrolled St. Simons streets throughout the night in neighborhoods around Florida Street where Benefield was working with a crew Tuesday. Benefield was serving a 10-year sentence for burglary in Houston County. Shortly after Benefield fled the crew about 10 a.m., the Glynn County police set up roadblocks and checked all cars leaving the island, but by sundown they were mostly backing up corrections officers, said Jay Wiggins, director of Glynn County Emergency Management.
