ADEL, IA. — The race for the Dallas County sheriff’s seat is intensifying, with a challenger accusing the current sheriff’s staff of inflating jail statistics in an effort to rally support for building a new jail. Dallas County Jail Administrator Doug Lande this week said that statistics about the daily average population count he gave for 2010 were incorrect, but that the error was the result of a computer glitch. Challenger Jim Romar, 57, of West Des Moines sent a news release to media this week, accusing Lande of providing inaccurate statistics in a presentation last summer to the Dallas County Board of Supervisors and the public. In that presentation, Lande said the jail’s average daily population in 2010 was 66 inmates. Public records show the average was 39 inmates. The jail’s busiest days in 2010 were May 15 and 16, when 57 inmates were held, records show. Romar said he discovered the correct statistics in data he received after filing a public records request with the Dallas County sheriff’s office in February. “From the numbers that we were given, it doesn’t appear there is a need for a new jail at this time,” Romar said. “There is a better way to spend that money on law enforcement in Dallas County.” Dallas County is Iowa’s fastest-growing county, with its population increasing 62 percent from 2000 to 2010, according to U.S. census data. Dallas County officials are working with a Waukee architectural firm, Design Alliance, to complete a space-needs study that includes the jail. Romar and current Sheriff Chad Leonard, both Republicans, are the only candidates who have announced plans to run for Dallas County sheriff. The primary is June 5. Romar has not yet filed the paperwork to run for sheriff, but has until Wednesday to do so, said Jack Beeson, deputy auditor for Dallas County. Read More. |
