Three inmates were killed when they were trying to run away from a prison in the northern Philippines, police said last Friday. The police said that the three were shot dead by the corrections officers at the Iwahig prison and Penal Farm in Palawan Island. Three more inmates are still missing and believed to have escaped, it said. According to police initial reports, the three prisoners were trying to escape the penal colony when they were killed. After a headcount of all inmates, prison officials discovered that three more were missing, the police added. Iwahig is a medium security penal colony and is known as a "prison without walls." Many jails in the Philippines are suffering from chronicle lack of funds for maintenance, drug crimes inside the cells and under paid personnel who usually neglect their duties. Last month, a total of 23 inmates bolted their jail cells in the northern Philippine province of Laguna but six of them were recaptured afterwards. The Department of Justice said that three jail officers were sacked and would face administrative charges. |
