State corrections shift means less funds for county jail

PORT ORCHARD — A change in how the state deals with criminal offenders is likely to mean less money for the Kitsap County jail.

The state's Department of Corrections plans to implement a program that would hand out shorter penalties for probation violators and hand them out quicker.

Ned Newlin, the county's corrections chief, said that and other changes the state has made in how it operates could affect the county's jail budget by about $750,000. He drew that number based on statewide jail statistics from the past year, but said contract talks that are now beginning between the state and the county should create a more specific number.

Newlin said whatever tack the state takes, the chief goal locally is to make sure violators are dealt with well. "The concern is we want to make sure that if they're being supervised, that they're being supervised effectively," Newlin said.
