Four Metro officers suspended for beating drunk

It's exactly what the Louisville, Ky. Metro Police Department doesn't need: another case of alleged brutality -- but brutality is exactly what the accuser is claiming.
Erik Wolfe looked pretty rough following his booking at Metro Corrections one night last year.
"I had staples in the back of my head," he recalls. "I had boot prints on my back and the back of my head. My face obviously looked like what it does."
Now, four Louisville police officers have been suspended for what happened more than a year ago.
It was August 15, 2003 that officers made a run to the Have a Nice Day Cafe on Baxter Avenue. Wolfe, arrested for disorderly conduct and being drunk, was put in a patrol car. But Wolfe says they didn't take him straight downtown.
"I was handcuffed in the car, and they stopped the car en route to take me to jail. I got in the car fine. En route, I was taken out of the car while still in handcuffs, and three or four cars pulled up around the side of Officer Sapp's car, who was driving, and, uh, they beat me," he says. "They absolutely beat the [expletive] out of me."
Wolfe says they beat him because he was "running his mouth."
The officers suspended are identified as Gary Sapp, Donald Gillenwater, Chad Kaufman and Aaron Shepherd. All four officers have been suspended with pay.
As for Wolfe, who is a stockbroker in Paducah, he says he's never considered filing a civil suit against the officers. But he says did cooperate with the department's professional standards unit, which does internal affairs investigations.
