Safety Dance: Probation Officers Feel Budget Cuts, Union Uneasy

[Tampa, FL] A battle is brewing in the state pitting budget cuts versus public safety.

The Teamsters local that represents most Florida corrections officers has filed an administrative petition trying to block a reduction in the number of visits probation officers make to probationers homes.

But Florida Department of Corrections (DOC) officials, while declining to discuss the complaint, said Tuesday that the department continues to make some required visits to those offenders on probation and isn’t compromising safety.

The department recently said it would have a new policy regarding the way home visits are done in the probation system – a temporary change in effect for the rest of the fiscal year that is aimed at saving money by doing some checks without full home visits. The department has declined to publicly give details on its policy for security reasons.

But a spokeswoman for the agency said in a statement that home visits and monitoring of probationers continues, and those on probation are still required to meet monthly with probation officers at the probation office.

“Other measures will be taken to verify the inmate residence and employment, without having to visit their residence,” the statement said.

It also noted that face-to-face visits will continue for sex offenders, and that supervisors can approve in-person visits for any probationer when “the supervising officer can demonstrate a public safety threat or violation of conditions of probation.
