A Massachusetts appeals court judge has ruled the Bristol County sheriff cannot continue collecting fees from inmates while his court appeal is pending. Sheriff Thomas Hodgson was ordered last month to stop charging inmates for basic services. More than 100 inmates sued Hodgson over his $5 per day fee for rent and other charges. Last month, a superior court judge ruled that Hodgson had exceeded his authority by imposing the fees. Hodgson appealed, and asked that he be allowed to continue collecting the fees while the appeal is pending. That could take as long as a year. Last Friday appeals Court Judge William Cowin ruled against Hodgson's request. |
