The state Department of Corrections has fired two officers who worked on the Pittsburgh prison's F Block, and on Monday they made the first substantial public comments by lock-up insiders on an inmate abuse scandal that has prompted criminal charges and a federal investigation. Terminated effective late Friday are John Michaels, who was a sergeant with 14 years of service in prisons including the State Correctional Institution Pittsburgh and has not faced any criminal charges; and Brian Olinger, an officer against whom one criminal count was filed but dismissed. Both were suspended for a year, and won a March arbitrator's decision giving them nine months of back pay because the department did not meet with them before stopping their pay and benefits. The arbitrator ordered them back to work, but the department met with them and fired them instead.
