State pen crackdown turns up 15 shanks |

Officials at the New Mexico Corrections Department say they recovered a higher than usual number of inmate-made weapons called shanks at the New Mexico Penitentiary near Santa Fe recently. New Mexico Corrections Department spokeswoman Christian Rodda said Wednesday that 15 shanks were confiscated from inmates during lockdowns and shakedowns that took place March 29 and March 30. Rodda said guards normally find about three shanks — which have a sharp edge and/or point so they can cut, slit or puncture — per month. Read More. |
