MT DOC: Smith clemency hearing |
By Montana Board of Pardons and Parole |
Published: 04/10/2012 |
The Montana Board of Pardons and Parole will conduct a hearing May 2-3 on an application for clemency filed by Ronald A. Smith, who was sentenced to death for the murder of two men in Flathead County in 1982. Smith has asked that his sentence be commuted to life in prison without parole. A three-member panel of the board will hear arguments from Smith, his attorneys and attorneys for the state of Montana. The board also will hear public testimony. The hearing will begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, in the courtroom of the Powell County Courthouse and will conclude by 6 p.m. The hearing will resume Thursday, May 3 at 8 a.m. if additional time is needed for testimony. Following the hearing, the board has 30 days in which to make its non-binding recommendation to Gov. Brian Schweitzer, who will decide whether to grant clemency. Because seating in the courtroom is limited, the board asks members of the public wishing to attend the hearing to notify the board’s staff in advance by calling (406) 846-1404 or by email at dlucier@mt.gov. The deadline for submitting written testimony is Saturday, April 21. Written testimony can be mailed to the board at 1002 Hollenbeck Rd., Deer Lodge, MT 59722 or emailed to the board at cslaughter@mt.gov |
