Three officers at the Potosi Correctional Center in Missouri were injured when they were attacked by a group of inmates, Missouri Department of Corrections spokesman John Fougere said Tuesday. The incident happened at around 10 p.m. Monday. Fougere said officials were still trying to determine what happened and what set off the attack. Names of those involved have not been released, and no charges have been filed. The officers were attacked by a group of between four and 10 men, Fougere said. The officers were taken to a hospital, where they were treated for cuts and bruises and released. "Fortunately, the inmates were not using any weapons, they were just using their fists," Fougere said. No prisoners were hurt. The skirmish was under control in about 15 minutes, Fougere said. The housing unit was placed in "lockdown," a status in which prisoners are generally confined to their cells. The lockdown continued Tuesday, but did not apply to other housing wings of the prison. Four inmates involved in the attack were placed in solitary confinement, and others may be as investigators determine who was involved, Fougere said. The attack happened in a general area of the housing unit. During certain hours, inmates are allowed to move freely from their cells into the general area, Fougere said. Potosi is one of five maximum-security prisons in Missouri and is the only one that houses death row inmates, who are not segregated from the other offenders. Fougere said it wasn't clear if any of the prisoners involved in the attack were awaiting the death penalty. |
