Home for parolees gets axed |

Up to three parolees housed in a privately owned four-bedroom home on Hilton Road in Brighton Township through the Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Program will be moved out by early this week, according to Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan. Marlan said an attorney representing Brighton Township contacted the state Friday and "let them know the home on Hilton Road may not be used as a rental for unrelated adults." Marlan said the home at 8950 Hilton Road had been used as transitional housing for three parolees — including one sex offender — since Feb. 1, and added that the township has offered to assist the state in finding suitable housing for the parolees that complies with local zoning ordinances. Township Manager Dan Bishop told the Daily Press & Argus on Friday that the home violated the township zoning ordinance. It is zoned as a residential area for single families, which Bishop defined as "one or more persons related by blood, marriage or adoptions" or its "functional equivalent," as outlined in ordinance language.
