SANTA FE (KRQE) - Hundreds of letters are sent to New Mexico's prisons where they're checked then cleared. But investigators said an unusual piece of mail arrived three weeks ago at a state-run prison. "It had a chemical smell and what letters have a chemical smell to them?" said Dwayne Santistevan, administrator of the Security Threat Intelligence Unit at the New Mexico Department of Corrections. Investigators quickly found the letter was covered in Spice, an illegal synthetic drug that gives a high similar to marijuana but more intense. A similar letter arrived a few days later. Santistevan said staff members noticed both letters were slightly discolored and felt heavier than normal paper. "Whoever sent the letters was dipping this paper in chemical Spice, letting it dry and sending it into our facility ," said Santistevan. Santistevan said the letters are then ripped up and smoked. Inmates also sell the Spice-saturated paper. According to officials, a 1-inch square of the Spice paper sells for $5. A whole sheet of paper will sell for $250. Read More. |
