State urged to kill prison sale |

BATON ROUGE — State representatives poised to vote on legislation calling for the sale and privatization of the Avoyelles Correctional Center received a message Tuesday from the Southern Poverty Law Center urging them to vote against the proposal. Katie Schwartzmann, managing attorney for the SPLC, wrote to lawmakers, "We all want safe communities. And we'd all rather see our tax dollars invested in education and job creation that benefits ordinary Louisianans — not corporations or special interest groups. "That's why you must vote against House Bill 850," Schwartzmann said in her letter. "Through this legislation, the private prison lobby is trying to expand their profits at the expense of our communities." The House is scheduled to vote today on HB850 by Rep. Henry Burns, R-Haughton, which authorizes the Department of Corrections to call for bids on operating the prison. The proposals would be evaluated and submitted to the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget for final approval. In committee, Burns said there's nothing that would block the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff's office and prison employees from putting in a bid.
